Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
